01 The island

Santorini is the southernmost island of the Cyclades and is located between Ios and Anafi. Its area is 76 square kilometres and its coastline is 69 km long. The perimeter is about 36 nautical miles. It is 128 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus and 63 nautical miles from Crete.

02 The volcano

It is a complex of the islands of Thera, Thirasia, Aspronisi and the volcano (Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni, where the crater of the volcano is located).
It is included along with Methana, Nisyros and Milos in the active volcanoes of Greece.

03 The story

The name Thera was taken from the mythical settler Thera of Sparta, who settled on the island around the 10th century BC and founded the homonymous city on Mesa Vouno. The name Santorini was given to the complex of islands by the Venetians and was mentioned by the Arab geographer Edrisis in 1153. It is a contraction of the words Santa Irene (Agia Irene), taken either from the church of the same name on the plain of Thirassia, or from the early Christian basilica of the same name in Perissa, which is not preserved.Thera, Thirasia and Aspronisi are remnants of the prehistoric round island. They surround a deep basin of the sea, in the centre of which the Old and New Kameni emerged. It is this basin that is called the Caldera or Caldera, according to international geological terminology. It has dimensions of 8 x 5 km and a depth of up to 370 m.
